General Care S/H

The General Care for Orchids in Semi-Hydro:

  • Flush well and often:
The great thing about S/H is that I can be as fussy as I want with these plants but I cannot drown then. The leca medium ensures no matter how often I do it, I cannot overwater my orchid. In fact, more flushing is better for the orchid as it removes biolode (dead/decaying matter), irrigates, and aerates the root system. I use reverse osmosis water since I have a filter built into my sink.

  • Add orchid fertilizer at 1/8 strength at every flushing:
By including fertilizer at very reduced ratios, I will also feed the orchid everytime I flush the pot. The vellum on the orchid roots act as a catching mechanism for the nutrients so the initial flush is enough to feed the orchid. If there is mineral buildup, use only plain water until system is flushed. I am currently providing a solution at 50-100 ppm N.

  •  Provide Adequate Light:
My lights are full spectrum LED made from Sansi, which I ordered off Amazon. They seem to be fine so far, but my collection is mostly phalaenopsis and oncidium/intergenerics at this point. I will be experimenting with distance and plants as they respond in growth but I figure my phalaenopsis should be safe for now. My oncidiums are next to a west-facing window with the sheer curtain to help filter the hot, California sun.

  • Keep comfortable temperature and humidity:
When it comes to the semi-hydro system, its important to keep the orchids in warmer conditions because the temperature of the water reservoir and the root system greatly impacts the health of the orchid. Don't let temperatures reach lower than 55F for long periods or it will hurt many orchids, such as phalaenopsis which are warm growers.

My location here in southern California are ideal conditions for orchid growing both indoors and outdoors. While I do have a south-facing patio for future orchid growing possibilities, I am currently only growing indoors where I can monitor both of these variables according to the orchids' needs. I use a humidifier in my home to help with the dry, desert air which keeps the level at around 30-50% humidity.

Orchid Care After Repotting:

  • Flush initially with water, no fertilizer:
This is because I have treated the roots with chemicals during the repotting process and they are now very sensitive. The roots have been stripped of all the beneficial bacteria that help the plant metabolize the fertilizer and therefore leave it susceptible to root burn.

  • The next month of flushing should include only water and/or root stimulant:
It will take about that long for the beneficial bacteria to grow back. So during this time, flushing the system with a root stimulant, such as Kelpmax, will help boost the root development of the orchid and give her the roots she needs to establish herself.

  • Follow with general care for orchids but include root stimulant once a month during growing stages:
This means all year for my collection since my orchids are evergreen. This process will help the orchid, if following all the golden rules, acclimatize to her new environment faster, limit the duration of stress, and help her become established.
